Dear Newsletter Subscriber There's only a little more than a month left, until the LOTS event takes place on 18 February 2004! The detailed planning is advancing quickly and there's a lot of news for you.
LOTS - Let's Open the Source is an AssociationAs announced on our Website late last year, the LOTS organising committee decided to found an association to have some legal background for the upcoming events. We chose the form of an association ('Verein' as defined by the laws of Switzerland) as it agrees best with our organisational structure. It suits the initially set target to organise a bottom-up event to promote the use of Free and Open Source Software without being profit oriented and to display the democratic structure of the organisation. The organising committee therefore forms the first board, with Michael Moser as vice-president and cashier, Urs Gehrig as secretaire and Matthias Stürmer as president. To date, there are no other active members ('Aktivmitglieder' as defined by Swiss laws). Passive membership will be offered at the LOTS event for the first time. The bylaws of our association can be obtained through http://www.lots.ch/Statuten_des_Vereins_LOTS.html.
Foundation and initial Meeting of the Board of ExpertsTo guarantee a high degree of quality of the participating FOSS-projects, the organisational committee selected seven personalities of the FOSS scene and asked them to join the board of experts. Fortunately everyone accepted our invitation! The following persons form the LOTS board of experts:
- Dr. Pascal Habegger, 4teamwork GmbH
- Andreas Halter, nothing gmbh
- Dr. Michele Lanza, University of Bern
- Tobias Oetiker, ETH Zurich
- Christian Stocker, Bitflux GmbH
- Michael Wechner, Wyona AG
- Dr. Mike J. Widmer, Openlaw
The board met for the first time Friday, 9 January 2004, to decide on the 19 submitted projects. Fortunately all projects have been approved and will be accepted to participate in the LOTS event. This means, that each project will be represented by their contact person. The exact locations and timeframes for demo presentations will be defined throughout the upcoming weeks by the OC.
Postcards and Posters being printedOn Monday 13 January 2004, we've delivered the templates for a few thousand postcards. These will be sent to speakers and exhibitors starting next week - and can be ordered through our website. Please use these cards to invite everybody interested in FOSS to the event personally. This means, you can send them to present or potential customers, FOSS Developers, Instituitons, etc. We're counting on your help to spread these cards! Furthermore posters displaying some of the highlights of the event will be printed in A3 format, which can be put on pinboards of companies, universities, etc. We're looking forward to the upcoming 5 intensive weeks for the LOTS OC - and for you, if you're participating on 18. February. Thanks for your support and interest in LOTS!
Kind regards, Matthias Stürmer
